Cuban Americans For Engagement (CAFE) celebra con gran júbilo la decisión de la administración de Barack Obama de sacar a Cuba de la lista del Departamento de Estado de países patrocinadores del Terrorismo. En cada visita al Departamento de Estado y a las oficinas congresionales, CAFE ha llevado el claro mensaje de que la inclusión de Cuba es un anacronismo y una afrenta a la lucha internacional contra el terrorismo. Hoy nos complace ver que ha triunfado el sentido común y la buena voluntad.
La decisión también coloca a los EE.UU en una posición favorable ante todos los países del hemisferio a la hora de tratar el tema en cuestión en los diferentes foros regionales y reuniones bilaterales dentro de América Latina.
Recientemente el presidente Obama afirmó que los EE.UU son lo suficientemente poderosos para poder lidiar con pequeños países por la vía diplomática sin tomar sustanciales riesgos, refiriéndose a las negociaciones con Cuba para la normalización de relaciones. A ese respecto, la presencia de Cuba en la lista de países patrocinadores del terrorismo era un fuerte obstáculo para el proceso de apertura de embajadas y la normalización de relaciones.
Es conocido que las representaciones diplomáticas cubanas dentro de los EEUU han estado operando sus oficinas sin un banco que realice las operaciones financieras, con el consiguiente engorro y disminución en la calidad de los servicios que deben ofrecer.
Vencido este importante paso, alentamos a los gobiernos de Cuba y EE.UU a avanzar en alinear sus prácticas y políticas con el Derecho y los estándares internacionales. Nuestra organización se concentrará en acercar los pueblos de Cuba y EE.UU, y las partes de Cuba en la isla y la diáspora, convencidos que la normalización de relaciones que tanto desean ambos pueblos esta ahora más cerca.

Cuban Americans for Engagement (CAFE) celebrates the decision by the the Obama administration of removing Cuba from the U.S. State Department's list of State Sponsors of Terrorism. In every visit to the State Department and congressional offices CAFE has delivered the clear message that the inclusion of Cuba on the list is not only anachronistic but also a hindrance to the global fight against terrorism.
This decision also places the U.S. in a more favorable position with the rest of the hemisphere's nations when the topic of terrorism is discussed in international forums and during bilateral meetings throughout Latin America.
Recently, referring to the topic of normalizing relations with Cuba, President Obama affirmed that the United States is powerful enough to deal with smaller countries through diplomacy without having to risk much. In that respect, Cuba's placement on the State Sponsors of Terrorism list is a serious obstacle impeding the opening of embassies and eventual normalization. The U.S. risks very little by engaging in diplomacy and removing Cuba from the list.
It is a lamentable fact that the Cuban diplomatic corps in the U.S. has had to run its offices without a banking institution because of this designation, which has resulted in a decline in services that should be offered.
Once this important step is accomplished CAFE will continue to call upon both Cuba and the United States to bring their policies and practices within international norms and standards. Our organization will continue to concentrate on bringing together the citizens of Cuba and the United States of America as well as Cubans on the island with its diaspora. We remain convinced that the normalization of relations that both nations' people desire so much is now closer to being realized.
